A man in his 40s has been arrested following a series of rapes which took place across Manchester city centre.

Detectives from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) who have been investigating four separate incidents of rape in the city centre, which date back to February 2024, say the suspect was arrested yesterday morning (Sunday 21 July 2024).

It is believed that the suspect – who has not been named – has been targeting intoxicated men and women, raping his victims, and then taking their personal items, according to GMP.

The suspect currently remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt, who is GMP’s lead for Rape and Other Sexual Offences, described the incidents mentioned as “truly horrific crimes”, and said that the force’s specialist officers have been and are continuing to support those involved.

“We are doing all we can to provide the appropriate care that they need at this time,” DS Hunt assured the public.

“No one should feel unsafe when walking the streets of Greater Manchester, and we remain committed to achieving justice for all victims of rape and we do not tolerate any form of sexual violence in our communities.”

DS Hunt and GMP is urging anyone who has experienced sexual violence or abuse in Greater Manchester to please come forward and report it, as he added that: “Every report will be thoroughly investigated, and we will ensure that you and your loved ones are fully supported every step of the way as we seek justice.”
