Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has seized over £50,000 in cash after patrols stopped a car travelling through Manchester city centre.
As part of the ongoing Operation Falcon – which is a mission that’s been set up in a bid to tackle money laundering across the city region – the police force has confirmed that a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of possession of criminal property after a significant sum of cash was found hidden inside his car.
The vehicle was stopped by GMP’s Roads Policing Unit in Cheetham Hill earlier this week.
The arrest follows an intelligence-led operation by GMP’s Money Laundering Team – which is within the Economic Crime and Cyber Unit (ECU) and is partnership with Roads Policing as part of Operation Falcon.
The 37-year-old man has now been released under investigation following the arrest, GMP has confirmed.
This means that, in the five months since its launch, Operation Falcon has now seized over £750,000 from across Greater Manchester as part of the force’s crackdown on money laundering.
“We are working hard to tackle cash-based money laundering across Greater Manchester, which often funds serious and organised crime,” said temporary Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop – lead for GMP’s Operation Falcon.
“Monday’s seizure is just another example of the fantastic work that the team are carrying out as part of Operation Falcon, and we will continue to target those suspected to be involved.”
DS Harrop also confirmed the force will “reinvest the money back into local communities”.
