Manchester United have officially launched their Stone Roses collection in collaboration with current kit manufacturer Adidas and it is pure 90s-fuelled nostalgia.
The new range of Man United and Adidas Originals fashion revolves all around The Stone Roses not only as one of Manchester’s most iconic bands but intrinsically linked with the club through their walk-out song at Old Trafford for the past two decades.
Consisting of a classic-looking Adidas track jacket with the Stone Roses lemons in place of footballs on the United crest, pre-match tops, buckets hats and reversible jackets all inspired by the pattern on the backdrop of their iconic debut album and more, they’re sure to become collector’s items.
‘Madchester’ vibes through and through.
As explained by club legend Gary Neville in the full unveiling, who first teased the track jacket and white long-sleeve t-shirt on a recent episode of his ‘Stick to Football’ show on The Overlap, the bond with The Stone Roses truly became a thing after he was given the honour of changing the walk-out music.
“We were listening to Rocky. I love Rocky, don’t get me wrong, but he’s from Philadelphia… we have to have something here that’s authentic”.
With other players past and present going on to explain why the two are a “match made in heaven”, as well as Manc music icons like Liam Fray and Rowetta, matchday announced and the voice of Old Trafford himself, Alan Keegan, sums it up perfectly but insisting “it’s far more than just a song.”
But it’s the fan sentiment as they walk around the ground and push a giant lemon through the street of the Northern Quarter that rings home the most: “It encapsulates the Mancunian attitude”; The tune, it’s everything. It’s the club, the city, music, fashion, culture — it’s all in one.”
Available to purchase from today via the United Store and the club shop over at Old Trafford, you can expect to see a fair few of these around town over the coming weeks and months, not to mention plenty in and around Theatre of Dreams.
In other Stone Roses news, in case you somehow hadn’t heard, former lead guitarist John Squire has teamed up with one of the biggest Blues on the planet as his joint album with the only and only Liam Gallagher is soon to release.
Tickets for their Manchester shows and UK tour as a whole sold out in the blink of an eye but let’s just say we’re very excited for this record to drop.
