Where are Britain’s most dangerous roads?

Just before lockdown, car-buying platform Carwow submitted a Freedom of Information Request to find out which roads in the UK posed the most danger to drivers in 2020.

For the first time since they were first built, many of Britain’s busiest stretches of tarmac were left deserted in March.

The national lockdown saw people retreat to their homes and take refuge indoors, avoiding travel wherever possible in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Now that restrictions have been lifted (albeit with some exceptions and tighter rules in certain regions, including Manchester), traffic has steadily returned to the roads.

Just before lockdown, car-buying platform Carwow submitted a Freedom of Information Request to find out which roads in the UK posed the most danger to drivers in 2020.

The full results were as follows:

  1. Dorset (A35, A354, A3049) – 1,837 collisions
  2. Nottinghamshire (Mansfield Road, A60, A1) – 1,771 collisions
  3. Cumbria (A595, M6, A590) – 633 collisions
  4. Lincolnshire (A52, A16, A15) – 625 collisions
  5. Cheshire (M6, M58, A49) – 434 collisions
  6. Avon & Somerset (A4174; M5, J19-20; M5, J20-19) – 369 collisions
  7. Gloucestershire (A40, A38, A417) – 367 collisions
  8. Staffordshire (A500, A38 Clay Mills, A38 Fradley Lane) – 357 collisions
  9. Warwickshire (A46, A452, A444) – 335 collisions
  10. Greater London (Haringey, High Road; Ealing, Western Avenue; Enfield, Great Cambridge Road) – 298 collisions
  11. North Wales (A548, A55, A5) – 289 collisions
  12. City of London (Bishopsgate, Victoria Embankment, Lower/Upper Thames Street, London Wall/Wormwood Street – 219 collisions
  13. Cleveland (A19, A66, A174) – 207 collisions
  14. Hertfordshire (M1, A1, M25, Hertsmere Borough) – 157 collisions
  15. Bedfordshire (A505, M1, Luton, A5141) – 150 collisions

The most dangerous roads closest to home were the M6, M58 and A49 – which recorded a total of 434 collisions in 2019.

The worst of the worst, however, was the A35 – which is way down south in the region of Dorset.

At the end of last year, data showed that the most dangerous road in Greater Manchester has been the A58 (which runs north-east from Prescot through Bolton, Bury, Heywood and Rochdale).

The 282 mile-long A6 was also considered among the more hazardous high-speed lanes, as well as the A56 which travels through inner city Manchester.

Freddos are on sale for 10p at UK supermarkets for the first time in nearly 20 years

It’s happening… it’s finally happening.

We never thought we’d see this again, but for the first time in nearly two whole decades, you can now walk into supermarkets across the UK and pick yourself up a Cadbury Freddo for the price of just 10p.

While it may sound a little too good to be true, due to the fact that the beloved chocolate treat has been creeping up in price for the past 19 years, and has very much gone onto become a classic British reference point for the state of inflation and the rising cost of living crisis, we couldn’t be happier to confirm it is.

But, of course, there is a bit of catch (because isn’t there always).

For anyone looking to get their hands on a slashed-price Freddo – which we imagine will be the vast majority of people reading this – you unfortunately won’t be able to pop into any supermarket, as the 10p offer is exclusive to Sainsbury’s and you’ll need a Nectar card to be eligible for it too.

Sainsbury’s announced the return of the 10p Freddo across its official social media platforms this morning, and as you’d expect, shoppers are absolutely losing their minds over it.

The caption of the now-viral post reads: “Some things from the mid 2000s should NEVER come back, but this is not one of them.

“Head to any Sainsbury’s superstore to pick up a Freddo for just 10p with your nectar card.”

Sadly, not only is this unmissable Freddo offer exclusive to Sainsbury’s for Nectar card-holders, it’s also only available in Sainsbury’s superstores too, meaning you won’t be able to find the cheap frog-shaped chocolate bars in little Sainsbury’s Local outlets.

The offer is also only for a very limited time too, as it’s available to make the most of from today (17 April) up until next Tuesday 23 April.

Thankfully, Freddos are the only chocolate treats that Sainsbury’s has slashed the price of currently.

As a way of celebrating the iconic confectionary company‘s 200th birthday this year, the supermarket has also put offers on a wide range of other products.

Dairy Milk bars, multipacks of Fudge, Curly Wurlys, and Flakes, Dairy Milk Trays, Chocolate Finger biscuits, and Mini Roll cake bars are the other much-loved Cadbury products currently on sale with up to 30% off their marked price.

Rachel Clark, who is the Director of Grocery for Sainsbury’s, said on the supermarket’s current Cadbury offers: “We’re delighted to be celebrating such an iconic moment for Cadbury, and its milestone of 200 years as a loved chocolate brand. We know that our customers love Cadbury so we’re very excited to be offering market-leading prices across selected Cadbury products, with savings of up to 60% off with Nectar Prices.”

You can get your hands on free cookies in exchange for other unopened snack foods at a popular Manchester park this weekend.

That’s right, this Saturday is 4/20… and if you don’t know what that means, just Google it.

In a bid to mark the global event, Insomnia Cookies has decided to “spark up excitement” with it’s calling its most “blazing” offer yet.

The cult late-night bakery – which has two sites here in Manchester city centre, on Cross Street inside the Royal Exchange and off University Green, as well as a newly-opened shop in Fallowfield – has aptly-named the event the ‘Munchie Exchange’, and is inviting foodie fans down to a popular park in Fallowfield for some freebies.

Set to be hosted across “the green green grasses” of Platt Fields Park on Saturday 20 April, the company‘s dedicated pop-up will offer laid-back Mancs the chance to upgrade their snacks with a one-of-a-kind deal. 

All 4/20 celebrators will need to do is bring unopened, non-perishable snacks either to the Platt Fields pop-up, or any of the other three Insomnia Cookies stores in Manchester on the day, and exchange them for a freshly-baked warm and delicious cookie – and no, no that kind of cookie.

The munchie trade-up isn’t only a treat for your taste buds either, as every snack collected will be donated to local Manchester foodbanks.

Beyond the exchange, there’ll also be a ‘secret’ 4/20 offer that’s available for one day only too, and it means you can get yourself a box of four classic cookies for only £4.20 when you head to any of the three Insomnia Cookies stores in Manchester and say “I’ve got the munchies” to the cookie crews serving them to redeem.

“We’re all about bringing joy and deliciousness to our fans, and will be serving up in Platt Fields Park for one-day only,” commented Millie Ralston, who is the Senior Marketing Manager at Insomnia Cookies, ahead of this Saturday’s event.
