Manchester United Women’s star Alessia Russo is leaving the club after her contract expires at the end of June and is reportedly set to join Arsenal on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old has been at Man United for three years but is a lifelong Red and has described her departure as “the hardest decision [she’s] ever had to make”.

Russo made 59 appearances for United after joining in the summer of 2020, just two years after the women’s team was reformed and went on to score 26 goals for the club in all competitions.

Part of the Euro 2022-winning Lionesses squad and no doubt set to star in the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup, she is one of the Women’s Super League‘s brightest talents and ends her final season at the club as the Reds’ top scorer. She put out this heartfelt goodbye on her socials.

As she says in the video, whenever she pictures herself as a kid, it’s always her “in a United shirt with a ball at her feet”, adding, “In all I’ve done, I’ve given my best in the hope that I can leave the shirt in a better place for those come next.”

While many will obviously be sad and perhaps surprised her leave the club she has supported since childhood, others felt her departure was inevitable after a number of clubs expressed their interest over the past year.

Russo was the subject of two world-record bids from Arsenal earlier this year, said to have been around £500,000, but it looks as though they have been successful with their latest offer.

It’s been a brilliant three years watching Russo at Leigh Sports Village and Old Trafford and she’ll no doubt pick up plenty more silverware at the most successful WSL team in history.
