Manchester City legend David Silva has announced his retirement from football
Truly one of the best players to ever grace to Premier League.
Former Manchester City star and Premier League legend David Silva has announced his retirement from professional football after 20 years at the top level.
An absolute icon at Man City and one of the original crop of players that arrived following the takeover by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, alongside fellow legends in Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, he was ultimately immortalised in a statue outside the Etihad Stadium in 2021.
David Silva won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five EFL Cups and two Community Shields during his time in blue before leaving in 2020 and returning to his home country to play for La Liga side, Real Sociedad.
Now, though, after three seasons with the club, Silva has decided to announce his retirement at the age of 37 following a knee injury which saw his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) seriously damaged — a setback that even young players struggle to recover from. He bid farewell in an emotional video.

Describing the decision as a “sad day”, the Spanish midfielder went on to say, “Today I say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to… it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues who are like family to me. I will miss you very much”.
Paying tribute to the supporters of every team he ever played for — Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, City and Sociedad — the said expressed his gratitude for being made to feel so at home at each club.
Having won the World Cup, the Euros twice and many other accolades in his long and decorated career, including becoming the fourth-highest goalscorer in Spain’s history (35), Silva is widely considered to be not only one of the greatest to ever play in the Premier League but of his generation as a whole.
Now, after 869 professional apps, 156 goals, 226 assists and 20 trophies, the beautiful game bids goodbye to one of the most beautiful players we’ve ever seen.
