Derby double Manchester United Women Liverpool

As if the win over City on Saturday couldn’t get any sweeter, the club managed to pull off a derby double as Manchester United’s Women’s team cruised past Liverpool in the WSL too.

The men’s team secured a ninth straight victory with the 2-1 win over the blue half of Manchester, also making it 10 consecutive wins at home and taking them within a point of second-placed City.

Then on Sunday, the women did one better by smacking the Scousers for six in a beyond-dominant victory, with each goal scored by a different player.

Man United Women are now also up at the top of the table, sitting in second just three points behind first-placed Chelsea and with a game in hand, no less. Safe to say it’s been a good weekend for the red half of the city.

While ten Hag’s side had to settle for another nerve-racking albeit blockbuster winner from Marcus Rashford — and not without controversy for the first goal — Women’s manager Marc Skinner got to sick back and watch as his team absolutely battered Liverpool.

With finishes from Lucía García, Alessia Russo, Hayley Ladd; Martha Thoma, Rachel Williams and an own goal by right-back Emma Koivisto, the away team never had a sniff.

There were plenty of well-worked moves for each one, but Lionesses star Russo’s strike from the edge of the box was probably the pick of the bunch.

Better still, over in the Premier League, ten Hag’s first win in the Manchester derby also coincided with Liverpool also dropping points following a 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

Though it’s still far too early to be seriously talking about a ‘title charge’ for the men’s team, Man United Women are seriously in with a chance of grabbing their first-ever WSL league title.

Either way, Manchester was certainly red this weekend.
