Edwin van der Sar is currently in intensive care after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper had been on holiday in Croatia when he was rushed to hospital.

AFC Ajax, of which Van der Sar was previously chief executive, said in a statement that he is in a ‘stable condition’.

The 52-year-old footballing legend played for United between 2005 and 2011 and has won 26 major trophies in his sporting career.

A statement shared this afternoon said: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain.

“He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow.

“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”

The official Premier League twitter account responded: “All our thoughts are with you, Edwin.”

Manchester United shared a photo of van der Sar and wrote: “Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin.”

Fulham FC, who he also played for, posted: “Everyone at Fulham Football Club wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
