A conductor on-board a train travelling to Manchester has been praised for potentially saving a woman’s life.

Naheed Asif was working on a Northern train travelling from Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly last month when he noticed that woman who had just boarded was not feeling well and urgently needed some help, so the 47-year-old – who is trained in first aid – alerted the driver and requested for the train to be stopped.

The driver then halted the train at Cheadle Hulme and the line was blocked while Mr Asif contacted the emergency services.

The woman’s condition then sadly began to deteriorate, but Mr Asif followed instructions from the 999 call handler and provided assistance until the paramedics arrived on the scene.

After the emergency services arrived and the woman was subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment, one of her relatives got in touch with the train operator at a later date to say that Mr Asif’s swift intervention may have actually saved her life.

“When she walked onto the train, I knew something was not right and I needed to check on her,” Mr Asif explained, as he reflected back on the crucial moment.

He referred to his quick-thinking action as a “gut feeling”.

“I said I didn’t need to check her ticket, I just wanted to see if she was okay, ” he continued. “I knew she needed medical attention and we had to get the paramedics to her straight away, because I had never seen this before, even after previously working in the airline industry for 20 years.”

Mr Asif was keen to make sure people know, however, that his action was part of a “team effort”, as the train driver also assisted him while they spoke to control and 999.
