It feels like we say this every time a new month rolls around, but how fast is this year going? 2023 is flying by – and we’ve definitely been having fun.
Now that July is here, Greater Manchester‘s already-busy social calendar is only getting more jam-packed full of events as summer well and truly settles in – with everything from festivals, and family-friendly activities, to foodie feasts, immersive experiences, and so much more to be getting involved with.
So once again, we’ve cherry-picked a few of the best bits for another edition of our ‘what’s on‘ guide this week.

A brand-new Coronation Street Experience has opened, and it’s giving fans access to areas they previously haven’t been able to before.
The Coronation Street Tour is known for giving people the chance to discover the hidden world that lies behind the camera at the external sets at MediaCityUK in Salford, and now, the already award-winning experience has got even better as the new exhibition extends the current 90-minute tour and makes it even more “immersive” for fans.
You’ll get the opportunity to see Dierdre’s famous glasses up close, take a seat in Roy’s Rolls, or even stand behind the bar at The Rovers.
Strictly Ballroom: The Musical / Credit: The Lowry
Strictly Ballroom: The Musical is at The Lowry this week.

Based on Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning film, and with direction from dancer, choreographer, and Britain’s favourite TV Judge, Craig Revel Horwood, the production is currently touring all across the UK and stars Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton and Coronation Street’s Faye Brookes.
Bringing together a cast of over 20 world class performers, it follows arrogant and rebellious young ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings, whose radical and daring dance style see him fall out of favour with Australian Federation, meaning be must dance with beginner, Fran.
Together, the couple find the courage to defy tradition, and discover that to win, your steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom.
A huge circus tent has been installed onto the roof of Depot Mayfield in Manchester, as the world-leading cabaret La Clique is in town.
The trailblazing show – which has had its stay in the city extended right through to 29 July – features the best circus and cabaret acts in the world.
Presented by live entertainment company Underbelly, La Clique is wowing audiences with its genre-defining cabaret show, and for its Manchester stint, performers will include tension strap artist LJ Marles, singer Chastity Belt, aerial contortion artist Miranda Menzies, comedy and stunt performer Sam Goodburn, and more.
Fancy trying out some new bars, and restaurants that have opened in Greater Manchester before this month’s out?
Summer is here, al fresco dining is on the cards, and it seems like the suburbs are having a moment again, as Urmston has not one but two exciting new openings to shout about, and Withington has just welcomed Almost Famous into its neighbourhood, as Manchester’s original dirty burger bar takes over the short-lived Libertine site.
Elsewhere, Gordon Ramsay moves into town with his Lucky Cat restaurant moving into the former Jamie’s Italian site at the top of King Street.
We think you’ll agree there’s a lot to look forward, so if you’re looking for somewhere to grab a bite this week, we’ve rounded up some of the best new openings to try.

Plant NOMA’s ‘Evening Gardening Club’ aims to offer a comfortable, relaxed, and fun environment for people of all ages to come together on a weekly basis and engage with gardening in some way, shape or form.

This might be poking seeds into compost, sprinkling gravel between plants, or pruning old wood from within a tree, as the range of activity in the club changes as the seasons move and the gardens evolve.
Taking place every Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm, for “as long as it’s light enough to do so”, it’s said to be a perfect way to unwind after work, pick up some tips, and connect with nature.
Sounds of the City 2023 officially begins this week.
After having established itself as a staple part of the Manchester music scene, with some of the most acclaimed live artists taking to the stage over the years, the festival is back and taking over Castlefield Bowl once again for a series of headline concerts over the next couple of weeks.
British rockers Porcupine Tree are kicking-off this year’s festival, with other massive shows set to come from Stockport indie rock band Blossoms, the iconic Hacienda Classical, much-loved pop band Bastille, and so much more.
Sheffield Britpop band Pulp, Wigan indie rockers The Lathums, and Irish singer-songwriter Hozier are just some of the other names taking to the stage.

Manchester International Festival is back once again to break new creative ground and challenge perceptions.

Working with partners regionally and across the globe, MIF23’s expansive programme of original new work by artists from around the world will take place in venues and spaces throughout the city, as well as at the festival’s much-anticipated new home, the £210 million Factory International – which opens its doors for the first time in advance of its official opening in October.

KAMPUS welcomes the return of Manchester’s beloved weekend-long beer garden festival.
Back for 2023 and promising to be “bigger than ever”, Summer Beer Thing is taking over the waterside garden neighbourhood this weekend, and is gearing up to bring together beers from some of the UK’s top breweries.
Those heading down can expect to find a huge array of styles on offer, as well as a few ‘festival specials’ and one-off drinks created for the occasion by each of KAMPUS’ indie bars and restaurants.
Tipsy Tapas is one of Manchester’s newest bottomless brunches.
If you love Middle Eastern-inspired small plates, and a good Saturday afternoon out on the town, then you absolutely need to add this one to your list.
Hosted at former Michelin-recommended King Street restaurant Habas, for £38 per person diners can enjoy a ‘tipsy tapas’ with 90 minutes of non-stop cocktails, wine, beer, and a mouthwatering selection of punchy small plates.
Drink choices include the likes of fruit punch, Aperol and apricot spritzes, prosecco and bellinis, plus glasses of house lager and red, white and rose wine.
GRUB’s much-loved annual Burger Food Fair is back for 2023, and there’s a whole host of Greater Manchester’s best independent traders set to serve up a foodie feast.
What’s Your Beef Burgers, and The Neighbourhood Coop are just two of the traders that’ll be bringing a special menu inspired by their own take on the humble burger over the course of the two-day festival, and on top of that, there’ll also be a huge selection of sides, snacks, and all-American desserts to choose from to go with it.

Greater Manchester Fringe Festival is back for 2023.
The annual region-wide theatre festival is all about celebrating new and emerging talent, and it’s taking over the region for the whole month of July once again this month.
First taking place back in 2012 with six different venues and a handful of shows in each, the Greater Manchester Fringe has since grown each year with more performances, more ticket sales, and more venues taking part, and many past productions have even moved onto established theatres or recognised at the Manchester Theatre Awards.

IRONMAN UK returns to Bolton once again this weekend.
With Bolton having been the UK-based home to the world-renowned triathlon event for the past several years now, IRONMAN UK has become known for its iconic spectator support, incredible bike course scenery, and impressive finish line that’s in the heart of the town centre – with the Greater Manchester public always encouraged to line the streets to cheer the athletes on.
A number of temporary road closures will be in place across Bolton on race day to ensure the safety of athletes and the public.

Lots of iconic spooky films are returning to Greater Manchester cinemas this Halloween, alongside some new releases.
Now that October is here, there’s no denying that the spooky season is right around the corner, and Vue has announced that a whole host of creepy classics and the latest frightening flicks set to hit the big screen over the next couple of weeks – ranging from undeniable horrors, to family-friendly gems perfect for viewers of all ages.
Several cinemas across Greater Manchester will be taking part, including Vues in Manchester Quayside, Printworks, Bolton, Bury, and Altrincham.
Disney’s much-loved Hocus Pocus kicks off the lineup this month, returning to cinemas from today (2 October), before supernatural classicsThe Others and The Craft are back to terrify moviegoers from 16 October.
Iconic slasher film Scream – which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – also returns to cinemas from 23 October.
Cult-classic Donnie Darko and Guillermo Del Toro’s masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth round out the re-releases on 30 October, to celebrate their 25th and 20th anniversaries, respectively.

Then, when it comes to new releases, you can settle in to watch new psychological thriller, Verity, adapted from the acclaimed Colleen Hoover novel of the same name and starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, also arriving today (2 October).
Meanwhile, Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, based on the beloved and award-winning BBC comedy, arrives on 23 October.
Other new releases include The Other Mommy, DC’s Clayface, and Crawlers.
And if the lineup wasn’t good enough as it is on its own, film lovers at Vue Quayside, Printworks, and Bolton can also enjoy Vue’s biggest and comfiest seat, the ‘Ultra Lux’ – which are strategically positioned to give the best possible view of the big screen with extra-wide armrests, a personal table for snacks and drinks, and a state-of-the-art beverage cooler.

Manchester Half Marathon 2026 – route map, start times, travel warnings, and more

It’s that time of year again: the ASICS Manchester Half Marathon is back this weekend and with more than 32,000 people taking part, it truly is going to be bigger and better than ever.
Taking place on Sunday 4 October, Mancs and runners from all over will be taking on the 13.1-mile challenge. Make that 21.1 kilometres if you’re metric folks like us.
The event expects to raise £1.8 million for various well-deserving charities including Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, The Christie, and Moya Cole Hospice.
It’s set to be a bad day to be an empath – the event hosts thousands of runners, all with their own personal stories coming together to raise awareness and money for charities close to their hearts.
This race never fails to draw in a city full of supportive spectators, even despite a chill being back in the air. So, remember to pack those tissues and prepare to cry for thousands of people you don’t even know.
Being the biggest half marathon event in the region, whether you’re taking part or just cheering on from the roadside, it’s handy to have all the important details in one place.
Be it the route, hotspots for spectators, or freebies, we’ve got everything you need in this helpful guide to the 2026 ASICS Manchester Half. Let’s start off simple.
ASICS Manchester Half Marathon 2026 – all you need to know
What time does the 2026 ASICS Manchester Half start?
Those running in this year’s Manchester Half can expect to hear the starting gun from as early as 8:50am.
The first wave of the day will be for the elite wheelchair participants, with the rest of the standard elite wave following them at 9:05am.
However, as we’re sure you’re all fully aware, the Manchester Half is broken up into waves based on predicted times. The rest of the participants will then set off in roughly 10-minute intervals, depending on their allocated bib colour, with the final group setting off at approximately 11:07 am.

The starting line and route for the Manchester Half 2026
To access the start line on race day, participants should head to the Event Village, atthe Lancashire County Cricket Club Grounds.
Here you’ll find the bag drop station, toilets for those pre-race nervous wees and poos (this is a non-judgmental space, guys – trust us and go for a ‘safety’ one), as well as the many marshals who will direct you to the starting line which is located on Talbot Road, opposite Trafford Town Hall.
The course will take runners into Manchester city centre, then back through Stretford, Sale, Chorlton-cum-Hardy and finishing back on Talbot Road before the celebrations can begin. You’ll be glad to hear the route is generally flat with no major inclines – phew.

Manchester Half Marathon water stations, toilets and nutrition
Now, you might be thinking, “What about water stations?” or, “Where are the toilets in case there’s, you know… an emergency along the way”. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of both, as well as vital points to pick up some mid-race fuel.
There will be four water stations located roughly every three miles along the course to keep participants refreshed; there will also be ESN Hydro Gels available at the second and third water stations to give participants that extra boost if needed.
As for toilets, you’ll find them at or near each water station, as well as at the Event Village before and after the race, so you’ll have plenty of chances to grab a pit stop.

Manchester Half Marathon road closures and travel info
As for travel advice, it’s going to be a busy weekend and so please allow extra time for any journeys.
As I’m sure you can imagine, this type of event does require a fair few road closures, meaning driving is strongly discouraged, to avoid missing your start time due to traffic.
Many bus services will also be diverted due to these closures, too.
Whether you live in the city centre, you’re getting the train into Piccadilly or Victoria from further afield, or you choose to Park and Ride, our recommendation would always be to use the Bee Network trams.
The closest tram stops are Old Trafford and Trafford Bar, but they may be congested due to their close proximity to the race, so why not incorporate a gentle 15-minute walk into your pre-run warm up and get off at the quieter Imperial War Museum tram stop.

Where is best for spectators to watch the Manchester Half?
Spectators are best to encourage loved ones on from along the course, rather than just at the start and the finish area where access is limited and often overcrowded.
There are multiple places along the course to cheer on our wonderful runners including the Asics Cheer Zone, The Bupa Stretch, ESN Fuel & Cheer Zone and cheer points from all of the Official Charity Partners.
The Deansgate Interchange would be our recommendation at the start of the day to soak up the atmosphere, where a big screen will show the live starts from the ‘Kick-Off Cam.’
Other prime viewing spots include Stretford, Sale and Chorlton around a mile before the finish.
To see participants cross the finish line, you can get another view away from the roadside by heading inside the Lancashire County Cricket Club. Here, The Event Village is set to be the place to be, with food and drink vendors and a large screen, to show live finish line coverage throughout the day.

Now, in case you need any extra information, we thought we’d give you a glimpse of what’s up for grabs at this year’s Manchester Half Marathon – other than glory, of course.
This year’s Finisher Tee is one of our favourites for a long time, showing the route in a black and gold design, making it the perfect keepsake to remember such a huge achievement.
Oh yeah, and there is the obvious prize you’re all working towards: the 2026 Asics Manchester Half Marathon medal. We really love this year’s design too and we can’t wait to see you all wearing them proudly around your necks in just a few days’ time.
What else to look out for at the 2026 Asics Manchester Half Marathon?
Beyond all that, there’s also an array of activities and new experiences to get involved in over the event weekend.
To make the most of what’s on offer, spectators can also use new interactive walking maps on the online Spectator Hub. These maps contain recommended routes for walking, stop-off points for refreshments and more transport suggestions.
Oh – and the hugely popular hyper-personalised bibs are back. As part of the ‘Express Yourself’ edition there are some super exciting new design options.
What post-run treats can you make the most of?
There will also be plenty of freebies and exciting activities on offer for participants.
Now the race is over, head on down to The Event Village to begin the celebrations. Here, there will be an ESN Performance Hub, ASICS Celebration Zone, Bupa Recovery Zone and Vitamin Well Victory Vault.
First up, ESN are giving out their Goat Bars over the finish line. These recovery protein bars will help to repair your muscles, allowing you to re-energize ahead of your evening plans.
Next, head on over to the Erdinger Alkoholfrei DJ zone to quench your thirst with a natural isotonic drink packed with vitamins and minerals to replenish any lost.
Finally, there will also be ice cold Vitamin Well drinks available in the Athlete’s village to quench your thirst and ensure you leave feeling revitalised, before collecting kudos from your peers.
Once you’ve collected your goodies, move on to the Asics Celebration Zone to get your picture taken, then visit the Bupa Recovery Zone to unwind with physiotherapists leading stretch sessions. The ESN Performance Hub will also allow supporters a chance to win exclusive products, while runners can pick up a limited number of ESN Fuel Pack goodie bags.
There’s lots to get your hands on so make the most of it before leaving the village – after all, you deserve it.
