Passengers are being urged stop viewing content that’s “not suitable for work” on trains and stations in Greater Manchester and beyond.

It’s probably not what you were expecting to read this morning, but Northern is appealing to its customers travelling on services across the North to “wait until you get home” and extend the strict NSFW rule around the viewing of “explicit material” from the workplace over to their trains and stations too.

The train operator says it knows that most people are likely to “err on the side of caution” and refrain from watching explicit material in the workplace.

This is why it believes people may think the train journey home is “the first opportunity to take a look”.

Northern appears to have predominately expressed its concern over people watching NSFW content using its free public WiFi service.

“We welcome millions of people into our stations and onboard our trains every year, and access to safe and reliable internet is part and parcel of our customers’ expectations,” explains Tricia Williams – Chief Operating Officer at Northern.

“It’s important, however, that people remember that some content is not suitable for everyone to see or hear, and as such, if something is ‘not suitable for work’, then it’s more than likely not suitable in our stations or onboard our trains either.

The train operator says it’s also keen to remind all passengers that internet in stations and on trains across the North is delivered in partnership with ‘Friendly WiFi’.

Friendly WiFi is a government-initiated safe certification standard for public WiFi.
