There’s no escaping the Manchester Christmas Markets, which have once again spewed festive cheer all over the city centre.
From the wooden huts that line the streets to the giant ice rink at Cathedral Gardens to the trail of glowing light installations, there’s no denying that Christmas is here (even if it is barely November).
The main hub of this year’s Christmas Markets is Piccadilly Gardens, which has been turned into Winter Gardens, a hive of food, drink and entertainment.
The much-maligned corner of the city centre has now been kitted out with shipping containers, decking, seating areas, stages and even a couple of tipis.
But if you glance away from the very obvious sparkle and shimmer of the markets, there are still surprises in store, even for the proper Mancs who think they’ve seen everything the markets have to offer.
Tucked away in the corner of Winter Gardens, beside the stage that will host live entertainment all festive season, is a wardrobe.
Open its wooden doors and you’ll find a few fur coats concealing a whole extra section of the Christmas Markets – complete with fake snow.
There’s a tiny secret bar decorated with fairy lights, branches and wooden benches, as well as miniature pine trees.
The bar area has space for about 20 drinkers, and a bar serving beers and a few other spirits.
And those fur coats hanging up by the door? Yeah, no one seems to mind if you wrap up in one.
This year’s Christmas Markets are open now and will run through until 22 December.
You’ll find hubs at Piccadilly Gardens, St Ann’s Square, Exchange Square, Cathedral Gardens, Market Street, King Street and New Cathedral Street.
