It looks like we’re set for another busy week in Greater Manchester.
Not only is there a whole host of exciting activities lined up in the events calendar this month, but there’s plenty to be getting up to across the region this week, and we’ve cherry-picked a few of the best bits for another edition of our ‘what’s on‘ guide for the city and beyond.
As always, some of the events we’re going to mention are completely free, while others will set you back a few pounds, and many will need to be booked in advance.

13 street pianos have been dotted around popular Manchester locations, and they’re free for the public to play all month.
The annual Manchester Jazz Festival (mjf) is arriving in our city on Friday 20 – Sunday 29 May, and to properly celebrate the 2022 edition in style, festival organisers have teamed up with the beloved Forsyth Music Shop to place over a dozen pianos at well-known sites in the hunt for Manchester’s most entertaining street pianist.
You don’t even need any technical talent or formal training either, as the competition is open to everyone, and there’s some brilliant prizes to be won.
Flashback Festival is finally upon us, transporting Mancs back to the 90s and 00s.
The gloriously nostalgic festival will be headlined by the likes of Example, Tinchy Stryder, Tulisa, Judge Jules, Dave Pearce, Ultrabeat, and many more.
The four stages will be hosted by brands such as Clubland, Hed Kandi, Back by Dope Demand, and Trance Anthems.
The blasts from the past will continue – quite literally – in the food and drink side of things, with a stand dedicated to Tango Ice Blasts, as well as appearances from Porky Pig, shisha and some vegan food.
Northern kids of the 80s, 90s, and 00s will truly be able to revisit their youth, as the abandoned Camelot Theme Park in Chorley goes back to its days of Arthurian legend for the new Summer Knights drive-in cinema and entertainment attraction this summer.
Kicking off on Friday 20 May with the absolute 70s classic that is Grease, some of the other film highlights in the genre-diverse lineup include Insidious, Superbad, The Greatest Showman, Anchorman, Dirty Dancing, and Disney’s newest smash-hit, Encanto, just to name a few.
There’ll also be a fully-licensed bar and a number of street food vendors on site to choose from to make it a truly magical night.
A three-day outdoor festival full of food, drink, and live music is set to return to a hidden street in Manchester city centre this weekend.
Back by popular demand after what was a successful run in 2021, city centre dining and leisure destination, The Great Northern Warehouse, has announced that it’s hosting its three-day outdoor festival, Deansgate Mews Festival, once again in 2022 – with live music, market traders, Al Fresco dining, and so much more on the lineup.
The festival is completely free to attend, and will celebrate all the eclectic independent food and drink businesses on the street.
Over 40 different music acts are also on the lineup this year.
Legendary Manchester club The Hacienda is turning 40 this month, and to celebrate there will be a huge party in the car park beneath the apartments where the original club once stood this weekend.
Whitworth Street West might now be home to a series of neat magnolia two beds, but – if its walls could talk – they would still speak of hazy all-nighters, sweatbox dancefloors, and the thumping basslines of the early acid house scene where it all began.
Planned to mark 40 years to the day the club first opened its doors, the 40th anniversary event sees a host of the Hacienda’s finest residents return to the building with Graeme Park, DJ Paulette, Jon Dasilva, Tom Wainwright, Hewan Clarke, Aaron Mellor. K Klass live and surprise guests all coming along for the anniversary party.
City centre bar, restaurant, nightlife destination, and live music venue Joshua Brooks is welcoming acclaimed house and techno DJ / producer Fleur Shore for an all-night set this Saturday 21 May.
Tickets are now available to buy online, setting you back just £10 each, and you must be 18 or over to gain entry.
Great Manchester Run 2022 / Credit: Great Manchester Run
The Great Manchester Run 2022 is returning this Sunday 22 May.
With exciting new features added for 2022, runners will be treated to loads more entertainment as they make their way around either a 10km or a half-marathon course, with everything from water pistol breaks to a live DJ, as organisers pull out all the stops to make it the best Great Manchester Run yet.
The action will begin before the race even starts and continue long after it ends too, with a live DJ at the start line to get the energy levels up, and then a new on-course entertainment area, and even an apres-run zone across the finish line for runners to celebrate with food and drink stalls, and music.

A giant cat exhibition has arrived in Manchester and it’s FREE to visit

There’s a new exhibition that has popped up in Manchester city centre featuring a giant inflatable cat, and you can visit for free.
Manchester is always at the epicentre of all things art and culture, and this latest exhibition has got to be one of the cutest ones yet.
Manchester Museum, part of the University of Manchester (UoM) in the heart of the city centre, has gained a brand-new – and quite large feline friend – who’s decided to take a pre-planned nap in this gallery room for the next two months.
Titled ‘The Cat That Slept for a Thousand Years’, this exhibition features a 10-metre long kitty full of personality from the inside out, quite literally, as its body is filled with soft lighting.
Anyone attending can get as up close and personal as they like, as touching and stroking the cat is encouraged, and even better, this new city centre activity is completely free.
This giant cat exhibition is the genius of interactive soft robotics company Air Giants, which is known for working on similar projects involving illuminated and inflatable sculptures.
The cat-themed piece of art is not only Air Giants’ biggest piece of work to date, it’s also a world-first experience, unlike anything the museum has ever seen before.

“It has been a joy to work closely with the museum to develop this project,” commented Emma Powell, Creative Director at Air Giants.
“We’re hoping audiences will have a joyful connection to the cat and the story around it. We can’t wait for people to experience this magical and gentle exhibition in Manchester this summer.”
‘The Cat That Slept for a Thousand Years’ is now at Manchester Museum until Sunday 14 September, with free entry for all ages.

Drake at Co-op Live, Manchester – tickets, times, support acts, setlist and more for UK tour

Rap champion Drake is touching down in Manchester at Co-op Live for four nights of electric energy with some very “special shows 4 u”.
The Canadian hitmaker has just come off the back of three very impressive nights at one of the biggest music events of the year, Wireless Festival, and now he’s ready to tour the UK and Europe.
Drake has solidified his position in the rap field, dropping bangers from 2006 and since then, he’s gone on to have some of the most streamed tracks of all time with ‘One Dance’ and ‘God’s Plan’.
He’s also become a mainstay in online music discussions, earning a place in ‘The Big Three’ where the Toronto-born rapper shares this honour with fellow respected rap nobles J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar.

After almost two decades racking up an impressive collection of hits, it’s no surprise that this setlist is quite a lengthy one.
Drake is known to tweak and fine-tune his setlists depending on each city, like his recent three-day headline slot at Wireless Festival, which saw a new roster of hits each night.
The Canadian rapper recently played a huge headline gig in Birmingham, and these were the tracks that played out. Hopefully, a lot of these will get a performance in Manchester when he visits Co-op Live.

Who is supporting Drake at Co-op Live?
With so many songs to get through, it’s no real surprise that there’s just one support act for ‘Drizzy’s Co-op Live debut, and it’s a pretty popular compatriot of his.

His name is often stylised in all caps, but we feel that’s almost like internet shouting, so we’ll just share one of those aforementioned features instead.
They’ve been working together in some capacity for more than a decade now.
Don’t worry, if you haven’t heard much of him before, there’s very little shouting – though you will likely recognise his soft R’n’B vocals.
What are the stage times for Drake in Manchester?
Doors for each of Drake’s ‘Some Special Songs 4 UK’ tour with PartyNextDoor will open from 6:30pm with no official start time listed yet.
That being said, you can expect the pair to spend a fair amount of time together on the stage.
Co-op Live has a strict curfew of 11pm, meaning you can hear all 40 songs on the Canadian performer’s setlist without having to say ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’.

How to get to Co-op Live concerts
Tram
For those of you heading to Co-op Live, luckily, it’s right next door to a rather famous big blue stadium and its integrated Metrolink stop.
Head along the light blue or orange lines directly to the Etihad Campus or Ashton-under-Lyne, and you can get off the tram literally spitting distance from the arena. You can find the full map HERE.
Trams run frequently on the Ashton-Eccles line to the Etihad stop, with services leaving every six minutes from the city centre until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Bus
You can find the full list of bus routes HERE, with the one in closest proximity to the venue being the 53 bus, which runs from Cheetham Hill through to Higher Crumpsall, Old Trafford and Pendleton, leaving just a two-minute walk to Co-op Live. You also get free Bee Network travel with any valid event ticket.
Getting there by car and parking
If you’re driving, there is limited parking available at the venue, but this must be pre-booked ahead of time; there are also designated drop-off areas.
The postcode is M11 3DU and you can follow the signs towards the wider Etihad Campus as you get closer; directions to the adjacent drop-off points will also be signposted.
Keep in mind that congestion on the roads close to the stadium is expected to gather around two hours prior to any event, so if you are travelling on the road, these are the suggested times they provide come event day – though estimates will obviously vary:
Alan Turing Way (both directions): plan an additional 20 minutes into any journey by road.
Hyde Road (eastbound): expect an additional 15 minutes to be added to your journey.
Mancunian Way (westbound): plan for an extra 10 minutes of travel time.
There are also three park-and-ride facilities near Co-op Live, but be advised that the Velopark and Holt Town stops will be closed post-event to help safely manage crowds:
Ashton West (Ashton line) – 184 spaces and 11 disabled spaces
Ladywell (Ashton-Eccles line) – 332 spaces and 22 disabled spaces
Walk/cycle
Lastly, Co-op Live is only a half-hour stroll from Manchester Piccadilly, and you could even walk along the canal all the way to the front door if you fancy taking the scenic route.
Greater Manchester now also offers the option to hire bikes via the Beryl app, with riders able to locate, unlock, get to their destination and then safely lock up the bike all through an easy-to-use app. There are hire points just near the south-west corner of the Etihad Stadium on Ashton New Road.
