Paul Heaton has said that he’s ‘working on plans’ to screen the England vs France World Cup match ahead of his gig in Manchester this weekend.
Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott are set to play a huge gig at the AO Arena this Saturday – clashing with England’s quarter finals game.
Paul has said that they understand fans ‘might prefer not to miss the youthful looks of Jack Grealish’.
His announcement that they are hoping to show the game has drawn a mixed reaction from fans.
Many welcomed the news that they wouldn’t have to miss the huge match from the Qatar World Cup.

But others said that it would ruin the show, with one person tweeting: “Please don’t ruin the show with that. I’ll be wanting my money back if I’m going to see football rather than the music!”
Paul replied to say: “We won’t. We just have to make sure the place isn’t half full.”

He has now gone on to address the divided opinions on the football being screened at the AO Arena, sharing a photo of himself pulling a silly face with the words: “Me trying to work out what to do next Saturday @England @AOArena.”
Many fans have pointed out that Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott aren’t actually due on stage until 9pm and that, all being well, the game will be over by then anyway.
Others have pleaded that they don’t cut the show short to fit it in around the England vs France game, and wondered what it would mean for Billy Bragg’s supporting slot.

Jacqui Abbott hasn’t been able to perform with the group for the last few shows due to ill health, but it’s hoped she’ll be back on stage with her former The Beautiful South bandmate by the time they gig in Manchester.
The duo offered refunds to anyone who no longer wanted to attend the concerts without Jacqui after she was told to sit them out on doctor’s orders.
But Paul added: “For those who choose to retain their tickets for the next three shows, I promise you that myself & the boys will put on a show to remember. We’ll sorely miss Jacqui but our intent is to make those who refund their tickets bitterly regret that decision. Thanks for your support.”
The pair were on the receiving end of a lot of praise from members of the public after announcing the tour, and capping ticket prices at £30.
They went on BBC Breakfast to speak about rising costs in the music industry while promoting their new album.

He said at the time: “I’m very much against greed in the industry. I feel as though there is quite a lot. We are trying to just battle and say ‘we’ll do it for as low as we can’.”
They also said they want to ‘set a bit of an example’ for the rest of the industry.

Five Manchester artists we’ve been listening to this month | October 2024
Danny Jones
Hello Manchester, hope you’ve been doing well and finding lots of great new music; even if not, you’ve come to the right place because it’s time once again to dive into five bands and artists from in and around Manchester that we’ve been listening to of late.
We’re not sure what it is necessarily – perhaps all the smaller to mid-level British bands that we loved for many years announcing their break-ups recently – but we’ve been soaking ourselves in pretty much not but groups and mainly infectious indie riffs for the past 31 days.
That being said, we do have a surprise or two on the list this time around and, more importantly, everyone that we’ve spotlighted is obviously brilliant because we’d never lead you astray.
Anyway, enough faffing about, time for you to find some new Manchester artists and music to get stuck into – go right ahead.
Five Manchester bands you should check out this month
First up on our list of five Manchester bands we’ve been listening to throughout October is the still very new and already very good, The Guest List: four mates making very good indie rock with a more old-school vibe that’s almost reminiscent of the early 2000s and a general swagger way beyond their years.
Only formed back in 2021 and are obviously still young lads, there’s already an impressive understanding of building both mature and memorable melodies, which we can only assume has come from soaking up the right influences growing up. They did go viral for a great cover of ‘505’ by Arctic Monkeys too.
They’ve only released a small selection of music so far, meaning you should definitely catch up with all their discography whilst it’s still easy, but we’d pick out ‘161’ as a great example of that impressively reminiscent sound and lyricism, so is ‘Won’t You Leave Me Alone’ and we just love the guitar on ‘Canada’.
2. Larkins
Next up for this month is Larkins and while they have been around for a good long while now, with just a couple of EPs and one admittedly short and sweet debut album between them, they still feel like our little secret somehow.
They’re categorically not by the way: these guys gained some loyal local fans from their humble beginnings up in Glossop all the way back in 2015, unbelievably, and as their Manchester following grew, along with the number of gigs and festival slots,
‘Hit and Run’ – the first song they ever released – remains an effortless indie banger designed to get the crowd jumping and an older track we also still love is ‘Sugar Sweet’, but TV Dream is still their biggest song for a reason. You can start wherever you want with these guys, to be honest, it’s all pretty good.
3. The Apex Singers
In at the middle mark, we’ve got undoubtedly the most talented vocalists we’ve ever put on this list simply due to the level of classical training, range and the sheer amount of people pulling together to make such a fulsome, orchestral sound. They even do workshops but it must be hard to teach this…
A Manchester-based vocal ensemble made of eight incredible voices, the name Apex Singers couldn’t be a more fitting moniker. They can go from soothing and uplifting – like you’re listening to the Elven songs from a medieval fantasy film – to haunting, hallow and utterly tear-jerking times.
It genuinely floors us at times that humans can sound this beautiful. Their recent original song ‘The Mermaid Wife’ is a stunning production and a special shout-out to ‘The Booley House’ which actually started out life as a fiddle solo, but you’ll probably best recognise this old Irish song made famous by Hozier not too long ago.
4. Rolla
The second to last band on our list of Manchester artists we recommend you get stuck into is Rolla, and we’re going from soft to hard and in your face with this one. Do the bucket hats, mod haircuts and shades give off quintessentially Northern rock and roll? Yes. Is that kind of the point? Absolutely.
Make no mistake, this isn’t just another band merely trying to imitate the Britpop sound that was mastered here in 0161 enough now, they’re the real f***ing deal if you ask. Rather ironically rolling Oasis, Stone Roses, The Verve, Shed Seven and more all into one, it’s pretty much a Mancs wet dream.
There are so many tracks that give Liam Gallagher leaning into the mic if that’s what you’re after, but ‘No Violence’ was the first track we heard, ‘When Life’s Thunder Striking’ is the one we fell in love with and we’re quite literally addicted to their newest single ‘We Owe You Nothing’. They’re also doing their bit to help out Salford Lads Club too.
Last but not least, we’re swinging back in the direction of no-nonsense indie yet again with Ventrelles, though there’s also a throwback element sonically here too. This Manchester quartet are still pretty green as well but they seem to have found the niche they’re going for.
Self-described as everything from ‘ScallyGaze/Council Soul/Highrise Psychedelia’ to ‘Fleece Pop’, you can call their so-called sub-genre whatever you want but you’ll definitely get dripping vocals that hark back to the Roses, as well as some Echo and the Bunnymen-esque effects and guitar patterns at times.
‘County Lines’, ‘A Symphony of Sorts’ and their 2023 single ‘Happenstance’ almost reminded us a little of Hard-Fi in spots; we’re not sure whether this was just a moment in time for the band but delays, pedals and shimmery guitars or not, we just can’t wait for them to drop some more tunes.
And there’s your lot, five more Manchester artists for you to familiarise yourself with and we hope you get at least some variety from us this month even despite the fact we’re still mourning the likes of Sundara Karma, Jaws, The Native and more.

Still, it looks like we’re getting back everyone from The Maccabees and Doves to even the Scissor Sisters, so it’s not all bad and we still love stumbling across new bands and artists more than anything.
As always, we encourage you to go back and check out last month’s list and all the other for that matter, and we’ll catch you next time!
Kendal Calling drops massive line-up for 2025 festival, including Courteeners and The Prodigy
Daisy Jackson
Kendal Calling has just revealed the line-up for its 2025 festival, as it gears up for its 20th year partying in the heart of the Lake District.
Courteeners, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy and Kaiser Chiefs will all top the bill next summer, along with dozens more incredible acts.
The hallowed fields of Lowther Deer Park will be filled with brilliant live music, art installations and loads more between 31 July and 3 August.
Also on the bill will be Sophie Ellis-Bextor, The Last Dinner Party, Travis and The Wombats, plus Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, The K’s, Lottery Winners and Maximo Park,
Kendal Calling has confirmed that its 2025 edition will bring together more than 80 incredible acts to celebrate the festival’s 20th birthday.
A major headliner – especially for those of us in Manchester, will be Manc band Courteeners, who had an unforgettable debut at Kendal Calling back in 2019.
They’ll be back with their new album beside them, Pink Cactus Cafe, but are still to sure deliver a brilliantly nostalgic indie set of hits like Not Nineteen Forever and Are You In Love With A Notion.
Courteeners’ Frontman Liam Fray said: “Our set in 2019 was electric and was, so I’m told, one of the biggest singalongs Kendal Calling has ever witnessed.
“So it goes without saying that we can’t wait to get back on the main stage, playing to 40,000 of you lovely lot. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve got 20 years of Kendal to celebrate, too. It’s going to be massive.”
Also headlining Kendal Calling 2025 will be Fatboy Slim, a dancefloor pioneer behind songs like Praise You, Right Here, Right Now, and The Rockafeller Skank.
The festival will be gearing up for a rave too with The Prodigy also topping the bill – the Firestarter techno group are one of the most influential electro groups ever to emerge from the UK.

The Prodigy are continuing the legacy of Keith Flint, now driven by Howlett and longtime member Maxim, reigniting their longstanding and loyal fanbase and introducing their sound to fresh ears and audiences.
Leeds favourites Kaiser Chiefs will be delivering an anthemic indie rock set filled with crowd-pleasing hits like I Predict A Riot, Everyday I Love You Less and Less, and Ruby.
The Last Dinner Party will make their Kendal Calling debut in 2025, after being named BRITs Rising Star 2024 and scoring a #1 debut album with Prelude to Ecstasy.
Legendary Scottish rockers Travis are heading to Lowther Deer Park, ready to perform anthems like Why Does It Always Rain on Me?, plus very special guest and long-time part of the Kendal family, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls who’ll bring folk-punk charm to the stage.
Frank Turner said: “I first played Kendal Calling all the way back in 2009, and they’ve had me back five times since, and now again for 2025, so I think they must like me.
“Which is a relief, because I bloody love them; the quintessential independent UK festival, great vibes, great people, great music, year after year. I’m beyond flattered to be there for the 20th instalment; long may they reign.”

Queen of the dance floor Sophie Ellis-Bextor is heading to Kendal Calling, plus Skindred with their reggae-metal sound, indie favourites Maximo Park, Wigan legends The Lottery Winners, indie icons Scouting For Girls, and soul queen Corinne Bailey Rae.
On the comedy front, Jason Manford will be delivering a side-splitting set.
The so-far-announced Kendal Calling 2025 line-up also features The K’s, Reverend & The Makers, The Pigeon Detectives, Daniel Bedingfield, Pixie Lott, Tim Burgess with the Royal Northern College of Music Orchestra, Inspiral Carpets Alfie Templeman, The Big Moon, The Royston Club, Nieve Ella, Lindisfarne, The Skints, and Sports Team.
And Kendal Calling’s late-night offerings will keep attendees grooving until the early hours. Mr Scruff promises to take fans on a journey of his genre-blending mixes, dynamic mashups from DJ Yoda and the freshest live dance from local act Lowes.
Thom Rylance of The Lottery Winners said: “Kendal Calling was our first proper festival, many years ago. And I think we’ve played it every year since. Except maybe one year, and I’m sure everybody said that was the worst year in history.
“I’ve had some of my most emotionally overwhelming moments of pride on stages in that field. Core memories I’ll never forget. The first festival that ever took a chance on our band, for that we’re forever grateful. Weird to say a festival feels like a homecoming show, I know, but it really does.”

Scouting For Girls said: “We’re absolutely buzzing to be asked back to Kendal Calling for their 20th anniversary. The crowds are always insane! Plus we are a band who love any excuse for a party so we’ll be bringing out all our big hits when we get onstage. A beautiful festival in a stunning location with a wonderful crowd – Cannot wait!!!!”
Andy Smith, Kendal Calling co-founder said: “I can’t quite believe that we’re about to celebrate twenty years of Kendal Calling.

“From humble beginnings welcoming 900 party goers to Kendal’s Abbot Hall, to an astonishing 40,000 of you who turn out every year to revel in the sheer joy and excitement of the perfect party, a glorious gathering in the fields of Lowther Deer Park – wow.
“Reflecting on the journey so far, the moments made and the community created, it really is quite emotional and remarkably special. It’s also the perfect excuse for our biggest party to date! Let’s come together to celebrate 20 marvellous years, joined by headliners Courteeners, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, Kaiser Chiefs and so many more.
“These are some of my favourite acts ever and I was thinking just last night, it might be Halloween but it feels like Christmas! I’m so excited to see you all next summer in the place we love to call home – the fields.”
